The Gospel lesson (Luke 10:38-42) for this Sunday deals with the story of Mary and Martha. Rev. Emil explores the ideas behind the story, and suggests that a clue to the mystery of one "necessary thing" might be found in our Epistle lesson, (Colossians 1:15-28) through Paul's desire to "make the word of God fully known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations . . . ."
What is that mystery? Rev. Emil suggests that it's this: There’s a point of encounter with God that can grow within us if we just take the time, pay attention, focus beyond distractions. What we are called to - the one necessary thing - is the experience of God, of God’s love first-hand, of forgiveness, and of oneness with the God who loves us.
Take a break from your Martha-busy-ness and have a Mary moment of contemplation, guided by Rev. Emil's words.
